About the Artist: Igor Karash
Igor Karash was born in Baku, Azerbaijan (USSR) in 1960. He showed an early interest in visual art and learned basic drawing and painting skills from local artists and mentors. Igor began his formal creative education at a local architecture university, later transferring to Ukraine's preeminent art/design university, Kharkiv Art & Design Academy (KSADA), where he received a Masters degree in Illustration.

Igor has since designed numerous sets for theater productions in Russia and the US and illustrated books for publishers around the world including Kniga and Detskaya Literatura in Moscow, Folio Society in London, and Top Shelf Productions, Centipede Press and IDW Publishing in the US, among others. Igor’s first large book project was a series of illustrations for the “Legend of the Flying Dutchman” published by Detskaya Literatura in 1995. The book was awarded a Silver Apple at the International Book Biennial BIB '95 in Bratislava, Slovakia.

Igor immigrated to the US with his family in 1993 where he worked in the graphic design and architecture industries — re-emerging as a book illustrator in 2012 when he won an international book illustration competition conducted by the House of Illustration and Folio Society in London. This resulted in two illustrated editions: The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories by Angela Carter (2012) and a 2-volume box edition of War & Peace by Leo Tolstoy with 30 full color illustrations.

Now based in Saint Louis, MO, Igor teaches illustration and continues to illustrate classic and modern literature. He has recently expanded his visual storytelling capabilities to the art of the graphic novel. His latest graphic novel project, an adaptation of A Boy’s Own Story by Edmund White, consists of 260 digitally painted pages. This classic coming-of-age novel was masterfully reimagined as a timeless graphic novel and published by IDW Publishing in 2022 and received high praise from literary and comic art critics. Igor has also begun to focus on themes of tyranny, war, and despotism and has visualized cautionary tales and dystopian stories as satirical posters and other visual forms.

Igor’s work has been recognized by numerous prestigious illustration and design competitions, including World Illustration Awards (AOI) in London, Hiiibrand in China, Luerzer’s Archive in Vienna, American Illustration (a-i / a-p), Society of Illustrators in New York, as well as Creative Quarterly Magazine, 3x3 Magazine, and Graphis. Igor is included in TASCHEN’s The Illustrator: 100 Best Illustrators from Around the World edited by Steven Heller and Julius Wiedemann.
